Titre : Abyssal environment and ecology of the world oceans Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Menzies, J. Robert, Auteur Editeur : John wiley & Sons Année de publication : 1973 Importance : 488 p. Format : 25 cm. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-471-59440-6 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 577 Ecologie Résumé : The last ten years of research in abyssal oceanology have yielded a wealth of new information about the patterns of life distribution in the deep-sea environment. This book, which draws from the authors' original research as well as from recent literature in the field, provides a cohesive view of the paleogeography, ecology, adaptation, migration, and zonation of abyssal fauna in the Northwest Atlantic, Southeast pacific, Arctic, and Antarctic oceans. Unlike previous studies, which concentrate on fishes in the deep-water column, it emphasizes the benthic realm, including animal life in and on the sea floor.
The first chapter of the volume is devoted to a history of abyssal research, with special reference to the experts and their contributions, their research vessels, and their expeditions. In the second chapter the authors assess present techniques of deep-sea data gathering, including deep-bottom photography. Chapter three constitutes a significant departure from previous studies in the area. The authors refute the validity of earlier definitions of the abyssal zone (such as a 2000 m depth) and assert that zones seem to be controlled by water mass and bottom current rather than by sediments, a constant depth, or a constant temperature. Using a variable depth limit, they establish an original bentho-abyssal scheme of zonation, based on faunal composition.
Succeeding chapters discuss in detail the various study regions and examine some general aspects of the ecology of deep-sea environments. The final chapter deals with the origin of deep-sea life and the evolution of the marine climate. Numerous illustrations based on in situ photographs taken by the authors, supplement the text and provide valuable new information about actual deep-sea conditions.
A unique blend of oceanography, ecology, and zoogeography, abyssal environment and ecology of the world oceans is an up-to-date source of information for oceanographers, biologists, and their students. In addition, because it presents data and conclusions pertinent to the regulation of oceanic pollution, the book will be of interest to those concerned with the control of pollution and with international use of the sea bed.Abyssal environment and ecology of the world oceans [texte imprimé] / Menzies, J. Titre : An introduction to mathematical ecology Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Pielou, E.C., Auteur Editeur : John wiley & Sons Année de publication : 1969 Importance : 286 p. Format : 23 cm. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 4716891810 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 577 Ecologie Résumé : The purpose of this book is to serve as a text for the students in ecology and to demonstrate the wide array of ecological problems that invite continued investigation.
The author has tried to formulate a compromise in order to pick selected topics over the whole range of mathematical ecology and then to deal in detail with those aspects that seem likely to furnish good starting points for further research.
This book is in no sense a review. An enormous amount of interesting and valuable work has been ignored and any mathematical ecologists glancing at the bibliography is bound to wonder at what may seem inexplicable omission. The author's object has been to provide a sufficiently detailed development of the topics examined for the reader to be able to consult the current literature with an understanding of what has led up to it; as far as possible nothing has been asserted without proof.
This book is based in one-semester graduate course in mathematical ecology that the author gave in the spring of 1968 while he was visiting Professor in the biomathematics program of the department of experimental statistics, north Carolina State university, Raleigh.
The present review is divided into four parts are as follows:
population dynamics;
spatial patterns in one-species populations;
spatial relations of two or more species;
many-species populations.An introduction to mathematical ecology [texte imprimé] / Pielou, E.C., Auteur . - John wiley & Sons, 1969 . - 286 p. ; 23 cm.

Titre : Aquaculture nutrition : gut health, probiotics, andprebiotics Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Merrifield, Daniel, Auteur Editeur : John wiley & Sons Année de publication : 2014 Importance : XIII-465 p. Format : 25 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-470-67271-6 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 639 Chasse et pêche commerciales, protection de la faune et la flore Résumé : Manipulation of the microbial gut content of farmed fishes and crustaceans can have a marked effect on their general health, growth and quality. Expertly covering the science behind the use of prebiotics and probiotics, this landmark book explains how the correct manipulation of the gut flora of farmed fishes and crustaceans can have a positive effect on their health, growth rates, feed utilization and general well-being.
Aquaculture nutrition: Gut Health, Probiotics and Prebiotics provides a comprehensive overview of the current knowledge of the gut microbiomes of fish and their importance with respect to host-fish health and performance, providing in-depth, cutting-edge fundamental and applied information.
Written by many of the world's leading authorities and edited by Dr Daniel Merrifield and professor Einar Ringo, this important book discusses in detail the common mechanisms for modulating microbiomes, particularly at the gut level (i.e. probiotics, prebiotics and synbiotics). The book is a key resource for an understanding of the historical development of these products, their known mechanisms of action and their degree of efficacy as presently demonstrated in the literature.
The fundamental material on the gut microbiota itself, and broader aspects of the interactions between microbes and live feed, provide essential reading for researchers, academics and students in the areas of aquaculture nutrition, fish veterinary science, microbiology, aquaculture, fish biology and fisheries. Those involved in the development and formulation of aquaculture feeds and those with broader roles within the aquaculture industry will find a huge wealth of commercially important information within the book's covers. All libraries in universities and research establishments where biological sciences, nutrition and aquaculture are studied and taught should have copies of this excellent book on their shelves.Aquaculture nutrition : gut health, probiotics, andprebiotics [texte imprimé] / Merrifield, Daniel, Auteur . - John wiley & Sons, 2014 . - XIII-465 p. ; 25 cm.

Titre : Boron proxies in paleoceanography and paleoclimatology Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Honisch, Barbel, Auteur Editeur : John wiley & Sons Année de publication : 2019 Importance : 231 P. Format : 26 cm. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-119-01063-0 Langues : Français (fre) Index. décimale : 551 Géologie, météorologie, hydrologie générale Résumé : Anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions do not only warm our planet but also acidify our oceans. It is currently unclear to which degree Earth’s climate and marine life will be impacted by these changes but information from Earth history, particularly the geochemical signals of past environmental changes stored in the fossil remains of marine organisms, can help us predict possible future changes. This book aims to be a primer for scientists who seek to apply boron proxies in marine carbonates to estimate past seawater carbonate chemistry and atmospheric pCO2.
Boron proxies (d11B and B/Ca) were introduced nearly three decades ago, with subsequent strides being made in understanding their mechanistic functioning. This text reviews current knowledge about the aqueous systematics, the inorganic and biological controls on boron isotope fractionation and incorporation into marine carbonates, as well as the analytical techniques for measurement of boron proxies. Laboratory and field calibrations of the boron proxies are summarized, and similarities between modern calibrations are explored to suggest estimates for proxy sensitivities in marine calcifiers that are now extinct. Example applications illustrate the potential for reconstructing paleo-atmospheric pCO2 from boron isotopes. Also explored are the sensitivity of paleo-ocean acidity and pCO2 reconstructions to boron isotope proxy systematics that are currently less well understood, including the elemental and boron isotopic composition of seawater through time, seawater alkalinity, temperature and salinity, and their collective impact on the uncertainty of paleo-reconstructions.
The B/Ca proxy is based on the same mechanistic principles as the boron isotope proxy, but empirical calibrations suggest seawater pH is not the only controlling factor. B/Ca therefore has the potential to provide a second carbonate parameter that could be paired with d11B to fully constrain the ocean carbonate system, but the associated uncertainties are large. This text reviews and examines what is currently known about the B/Ca proxy systematics. As more scientists embark on characterizing past ocean acidity and atmospheric pCO2, Boron in Paleoceanography and Paleoclimatology provides a resource to introduce geoscientists to the opportunities and complications of boron proxies, including potential avenues to further refine them.Boron proxies in paleoceanography and paleoclimatology [texte imprimé] / Honisch, Barbel, Auteur . - John wiley & Sons, 2019 . - 231 P. ; 26 cm.

Titre : Planet earth in jeopardy : environmental consequences of nuclear war Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Dotto, Lydia, Auteur Editeur : John wiley & Sons Année de publication : 1986 Importance : 134 p. Format : 19 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-471-90908-8 Langues : Français (fre) Index. décimale : 300 Sciences sociales Résumé : The climatic changes which could resuitfrom a major nuclearconflict would affect combatant and non-combatant nations alike. This and other long term environmental conséquences of nuclear war have been at the centre of the continuing nuclear debate in recent years.
Much has been said on this issue and much has been written, but until now there has been no comprehensive scientific basis for comment. The recent publication of the SCOPE Report on the Environ-mental Consequences of Nuclear War representa the first authorita-tive statement on the subject. This book provides a summary of that Report in a convenient and readable form. It is informed and objective, and presents the scientific case in a balanced and unbiased way. While the reader is left to form his or her own opinions, the views expressed in the Report are clear:
The majority ofpeople on Earth face the risk ofstarvation in the aftermath of a large-scale nuclear war; for those in non-combatant nations, famine could be the major consequence.
Climatic disturbances might persist for seyeral years, even in countries not direct/y involved in the war.
In short, it is possible that, in the aftermath of a major nuclear war, the global environment and human and social Systems could collapse to an extent that might preclude recovery to pre-war conditions.Planet earth in jeopardy : environmental consequences of nuclear war [texte imprimé] / Dotto, Lydia, Auteur . - John wiley & Sons, 1986 . - 134 p. ; 19 cm.
