Titre : Alginates : applications in the biomedical and food industries Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Shakeel, Ahmed, Auteur Editeur : Wiley Année de publication : 2019 Importance : 317 p. Format : 24 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-119-48791-3 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 579 Micro-organismes, champignons, algues : classer ici les thallophytes Résumé : Unique book devoted to alginates' properties, modification, characterization, derivatives, composites, hydrogels with particular emphasis on their applications in the biomedical and food industries.
Alginate is a hydrophilic, biocompatible, biodegradable, and relatively economical polymer generally found in marine brown algae. The modification in the alginate molecule after polymerization has shown strong potential in biomedical, pharmaceutical and biotechnology applications such as wound dressing, drug delivery, dental treatment, in cell culture and tissue engineering. Besides this, alginates have industrial applications too in the paper and food industries as plasticizers and additives.
Some of the wide-ranging topics discussed in this book include:
A detailed account of alginates, their structures and properties, modification and various characterization techniques as well as methods of processing
Covers the uses of alginates in pharmaceutical and biomedical industries, restorative dentistry, food packaging, beverage industry, and comestible applications of alginates
Discusses applications of different cross-linked alginate networks, their microspheres and hydrogels in relation to drug encapsulation and delivery processes and includes an introduction of the chemistry and pharmaceutical chemistry of alginates
Discusses the present use and future potential of alginates as a tool in drug formulation and regenerative medicine.

Titre : Coastal environments and global change Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Masselink, Gerd, Auteur Editeur : Wiley Année de publication : 2014 Importance : VII-438 p. Format : 28 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-470-65659-4 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 551 Géologie, météorologie, hydrologie générale Résumé : The coastal zone is one of the most dynamic environments on our planet and is much affected by global change, especially sea-level rise. Not only do coastal environments harbour valuable ecosystems, but they are also hugely important from a societal point of view. This book, which draws on the expertise of 23 leading international coastal scientists, provides an up-to-date account of coastal environments and past, present and future impacts of global change. The first chapter outlines the key principles that underpin coastal systems and their behaviour. This is followed by a discussion of the boundary conditions, including sea-level change, geology, sediments, storms, waves, tides and coastal groundwater, that control and drive coastal change. The majority of the book consists of a discussion of the main coastal environments (beaches, dunes, barriers, salt marshes, mangroves, tidal flats, estuaries, tidal inlets, coral reefs, deltas, and rocky and glaciated coasts), and how these are affected by global change. The final chapter highlights strategies for coping with and adapting to coastal change. Titre : Fishes in lagoons and estuaries in the mediterranean 1 : diversity, bioecology and exploitation Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Kara, Mohamed Hichem, Auteur Editeur : Wiley Année de publication : 2019 Importance : 265 p. Format : 23 cm. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-78630-244-1 Langues : Français (fre) Index. décimale : 597 Vertébrés à sang froid. Poissons Résumé : Lagoons and estuaries are transition spaces between earth and sea. Beyond their expanse, geographic repartition, geomorphological, hydroclimatic and ecobiological diversity and biodiversity, they play an important role in regional economies and are some of the ecosystems most vulnerable to global change.
Reinforced by numerous references, this book studies Mediterranean lagoonal and estuarine fishes whose diversity largely depends on the composition of neighboring marine and continental ichtyofauna. The authors describe their morphological, biological, ecological and behavioral characteristics by evoking their distinctive features and differences with their marine or freshwater homologues. Their adaptation strategies, elucidated thanks to recent advances in morphology, genetics and molecular biology, are recognized as a major advantage in the context of climate change.
