| Résumé : |
All organisms take up trace metals, both essential and non-essential. They accumulate these metals to different degrees in their bodies, showing different patterns of bioaccumulation. Accumulated metal can be divided into two fractions: metabolically available metal and detoxified metal. Metabolically available metal can play essential roles in metabolism, but is also potentially toxic, there being a threshold maximum concentration of this metal fraction beyond which toxic effects come into play. The second accumulated metal fraction is detoxified and may be stored to extremely high concentrations. Examples are given of different patterns of trace metal accumulation, interpreted in terms of these two components of accumulated metal, with implications for the choice of trace metal biomonitors. |
