| Résumé : |
This volume maintains the high standard of the series. With its detailed, authoritative reviews, it will be of interest to fish biologists, oceanographers and biologists in general.
The book opens with a comprehensive review by C.J. Corkett and LA. McLaren on the biology of the small copepod Pseudocalanus. This is probably the most abundant copepod in temperate latitudes and as such is the most important link in the food chain leading from the phytoplankton to fish. Almost all early stages of food fishes are known to feed on it. The second article by M.R. Reeve deals with the nutrition of ctenophores. These act detrimentally in the food chain for they are voracious predators which may at times decimate the copepod population as well as the young fish themselves. This is followed by a short article by F.S. Russell outlining the many ways in which a study of marine biology may have an important bearing on human affairs. The volume ends with two valuable reviews on pollution and plankton. The first by E.D.S. Corner deals with petroleum hydrocarbons and related compounds. To understand the possible effects of man-made pollution by oil it is necessary to know the natural levels of hydrocarbons in sea water and in the plankton organisms themselves. These are reviewed for comparison with levels of pollution. The second article by A.G. Davies reviews in a similar manner the levels of heavy metals present in the sea. |
