Titre : Advances in fish science and technology Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Connell, J. J., Auteur Editeur : Fishing news books ltd Année de publication : 1979 Importance : XIV-512 p. Format : 30 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-85238-108-3 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 639 Chasse et pêche commerciales, protection de la faune et la flore Résumé : Fish technology is part of the general subject of food technology. It is concerned with all those situations where fish is used as a food commodity, from the point of capture to the point of consumption. It embraces handling, machine operations, chilling, freezing, smoking, salting, drying, packaging, distribution, marketing, product innovation and development, nutritional considerations, standards and specifications, quality control. It is essentially foreshadowing the industrial application of existing or newly acquired knowledge. Fish science likewise is part of food science. It deals with understanding the background principles related to technology and is usually further removed from industrial application. It is a multidisciplinary subject embracing chemistry, biochemistry, physics, microbiology, engineering and statistics.
Particular aspects of fish science and technology have been considered at meetings in the past, notably at the series of conferences sponsored by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, but they have never been drawn together into an integrated whole. It is also at least a decade since a comprehensive book in this subject area has been published. The organizers felt, therefore, that all the topics included in fish science and technology should be reviewed afresh in the first half of the conference. They asked their chosen specialist reviewers to describe the development of each topic over its most formative period, to appraise current trends and to look forward speculatively. The aim was not to write a formal history but rather to emphasize the ways in which developments unfold and are influenced. All the lectures in this first half were presented in plenary session in order to provide the participants with an opportunity to experience the complete span. In the book the lectures are grouped into two opening chapters dealing first with fish technology and secondly with fish science. There is no significance in the order of presentation of these groups beyond the fact that fish science in many ways serves fish technology and is dependent upon its needs.
The second half of the conference was thrown open to the latest research and views, given at over 60 lectures arranged in three simultaneous sessions. The accounts in this half provide an engrossing record of the intellectual effort that is being brought to bear at this time on the problems of fish science and technology throughout the world. The papers have been grouped into 14 chapters dealing with different aspects. Comparing all the papers with those presented at conferences of similar kind held in the past, it is interesting to note how things have changed. Thus, topics like chemical inhibitors of spoilage, freezing at sea and irradiation, that used to be prominent, are absent this time. Topics like minced fish and krill have assumed greater importance. In other topics of older vintage, important new insights have been gained, confirming the healthy, progressive and ever changing state of research and development on fish as food.Advances in fish science and technology [texte imprimé] / Connell, J. Titre : Commercial fishing methods : an introduction to vessels and gears Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Sainsbury John C., Auteur Mention d'édition : 2e éd. Editeur : Fishing news books ltd Importance : 207 p. Format : 21 cm. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-85238-142-7 Langues : Français (fre) Index. décimale : 639 Chasse et pêche commerciales, protection de la faune et la flore Résumé : The first edition of this book provided an introduction to the important commercial fishing methods of the world, and the vessels and gear used. This new edition reflects the changes that have evolved in commercial fisheries in recent years.
This book was first published In 1971, based on text material used in the training of commercial fishermen at the University of Rhode Island in the United States. It was prepared to provide an introduction to the important commercial fishing methods of the world, together wim the vessels and gear used.
Since that time marked changes have occurred in the climate surrounding the world's commercial fisheries: extended jurisdiction has closed many traditional fishing grounds to fleets of large freezer trawlers from major fishing nations, management of fisheries resources and fishing operations is becoming increasingly involved, fuel economy is often of critical importance to the economic viability of fishing operations.
As a result, fishing operations are in a period of change; in most cases vessels efficient at working their country's extended economic zone are considerably smaller than the foreign vessels formerly fishing the same grounds; fuel intensive methods such as trawling are giving way to static gear, the operation of which requires considerably less power and fuel; vessel search time for fishable concentrations is being reduced by attracting sea life tp artificial reefs and floating devices; increased attention is being given to the use of aids such as sails to reduce fuel
consumption. .
These changes are reflected in the content of this revised edition; increased coverage is ~iven to the less fuel intensive methods and many new sketches and phctographs have been included in order to illustrate operations and equipment now in use. Every effort has been made to include only proven methods and techniques which are in regular use, and to avoid experfmeniaf or unproven operations and equipment.Commercial fishing methods : an introduction to vessels and gears [texte imprimé] / Sainsbury John C., Auteur . - 2e éd. . - Fishing news books ltd, [s.d.] . - 207 p. ; 21 cm.

Titre : Fisheries sonar : incorporating underwater observation using sonar Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Mitson, R.B., Auteur Editeur : Fishing news books ltd Année de publication : 1983 Importance : 287 p. Format : 25 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-85238-124-3 Langues : Français (fre) Index. décimale : 639 Chasse et pêche commerciales, protection de la faune et la flore Résumé : Interest in the rivers, seas and oceans and what goes on under water has grown rapidly in the past deqde or two, and in many countries a large amount of money is spent in oceanographical and fisheries work of great variety. Some of this interest arises from the difficulties which traditional fisheries are meeting nowadays and the need to obtain more food from the sea, while at the same time fish stocks are in danger of serious depletion; some arises from the needs of communications, eg ships and cables, and from civil engineering; some from the search for new supplies of oil and the routing and maintenance of pipelines; there are military and naval needs, the operation of long range submarines and weapons and so on; and some of the interest arises from human curiosity - the need to understand our environment, which is inborn to intelligent humans. Doubtless these interests have varying relative importance in different countries and this is outside the scope of this book.
Although there has been an enormous expansion in ocean activity in the United States, Japan and Russia, British efforts have not expanded in the same way. Britain, as a maritime nation with a long tradition of commercial, naval and fishing activity, has a long-standing interest in the study of the oceans, and was indeed a pioneer in the systematic and scientific approach to it. However, the British fishing industry is not a large one, being in the third division of the world fishing league; its total catch was about 824016 tonnes in 1980. Japan and Russia land over 25 times as much fish by weight. Nevertheless, the British work in oceanography and fisheries has been important and its present scale forces concentration on matters of real significance. In Britain the Fisheries Laboratory at Lowestoft, the Marine Laboratory at Aberdeen, the Institute of Oceanographic Sciences and numerous smaller laboratories operated by universities and research associations have contributed in various ways to advances in marine and engineering science, as have their counterparts in other countries.
An examination of the programmes and achievements of these various bodies will quickly show that a large proportion of their effort is devoted to developing means of gathering information about what goes on under water. Not only does the progress of research itself depend on this, but also, nowadays, the everyday activity of marine operations. Fishermen expect to be able to obtain information from their instruments about what there is in and under the sea, so do navigators, submariners, divers and others. No longer is reliance on local knowledge and long experience considered adequate.
Although this book is primarily concerned with acoustic systems of gathering information in fisheries operations and research, we must continue the process of putting things into perspective by examining the various kinds of information which are needed under water, the ways in which it may be obtained, and some of the engineering principles involved.Fisheries sonar : incorporating underwater observation using sonar [texte imprimé] / Mitson, R.B., Auteur . - Fishing news books ltd, 1983 . - 287 p. ; 25 cm.

Titre : Fishing and stock fluctuations Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Laevastu Taivo, Auteur Editeur : Fishing news books ltd Année de publication : 1988 Importance : 239 p. Format : 25 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-85238-155-7 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 639 Chasse et pêche commerciales, protection de la faune et la flore Résumé : There is a general impression that changes in fish stocks are mainly caused by intensive fishing. Scarcely publicized is the multitude of causes of fish stock fluctuations. This book attempts to summarize the available knowledge on the subject and includes original work of the authors on a matter vital to the fisheries industries of the world.
The influence of catches on the age composition of exploitable stocks is explained with quantitative examples, and it is shown that the influence of heavy fishing on stocks is, in many cases, smaller than previous theories suggest. The effects of fishing are compared to those of natural factors influencing stock fluctuations. This quantitative knowledge of the effects of fishing will help to promote better fisheries management and emphasize its importance.
This book summarizes and evaluates conventional methods of fishery resource assessment and factors affecting recruitment fluctuations, as well as the effect of ocean environmental factors and behaviour of fish to fishing gear.Fishing and stock fluctuations [texte imprimé] / Laevastu Taivo, Auteur . - Fishing news books ltd, 1988 . - 239 p. ; 25 cm.
