Titre : Deep-sea biology a natural history of organisms at the deep-sea floor Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Gage, John D., Auteur Editeur : Combridge university press Année de publication : 1991 Importance : 504 p. Format : 24 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-521-33431-0 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 571 Physiologie et sujets voisins Résumé : This volume provides a comprehensive account of the natural history of the organisms associated with the deep-sea floor. In the opening chapters, the authors describe the physico-chemical nature of the deep-sea floor, and the methods used to collect and study its fauna. They then go on to discuss the ecological framework by exploring spatial patterns of diversity, biomass, vertical zonation and large-scale distributions. Subsequent chapters review current knowledge of feeding, respiration, reproduction and growth processes in these communities. The unique fauna of hydrothermal vents and seeps are considered separately. Finally, there is a discussion of Man's exploitation of the deep-sea environment and its impact on the fauna of this, the Earth's largest ecosystem.

FROM THE REVIEWS:
'This is a landmark study , a well documented and lavishly illustrated account of almost all aspects of life at the bottom of the deep sea, so strongly recommended as essential reading for all courses in marine biology'
'Researchers will cherish this book for its broad coverage and superb reference list. Teacher will find its state of the art reviews invaluable for preparing lectures and students for preparing essays Highly recommended'.Deep-sea biology a natural history of organisms at the deep-sea floor [texte imprimé] / Gage, John D., Auteur . - Combridge university press, 1991 . - 504 p. ; 24 cm.

Titre : The diatoms : applications for the environmental and earth sciences Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Smol, John P., Auteur Mention d'édition : 2e éd. Editeur : Combridge university press Année de publication : 2010 Importance : XVIII-667 p. Format : 27 cm. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-521-50996-1 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 579 Micro-organismes, champignons, algues : classer ici les thallophytes Résumé : This much revised and expanded edition provides a valuable and detailed summary of the many uses of diatoms in a wide range of applications in the environmental and earth sciences. Particular emphasis is placed on the use of diatoms in analyzing ecological problems related to climate change, acidification, eutrophication, and other pollution issues. The chapters are divided into sections for easy reference, with separate sections covering indicators in different aquatic environments. A final section explores diatom use in other fields of study such as forensics, oil and gas exploration, nanotechnology, and archeology. Sixteen new chapters have been added since the First Edition, including introductory chapters on diatom biology and the numerical approaches used by diatomite. The extensive glossary has also been expanded and now includes over 1000 detailed entries, which will help non-specialists to use the book effectively.
