Titre : Dictionary of the french and english languages : with phonetic transcription of every fren Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Kettridge, J.O., Auteur Editeur : George routledge & sons Année de publication : 1945 Importance : 528 p. Format : 16 cm Langues : Français (fre) Index. décimale : 400 Langage Résumé : A dictionary is like a kaleidoscope. The bits of coloured Iglass are the letters of the alphabet. Together they form Iwords ; and words form sentences, phrases, idioms ; and [these reflect images, ideas. The near-in patterns of the I kaleidoscope are very plain : these are the literal meanings of words. Farther off they become less distinct: these I are the figurative meanings, the extensions of meanings, the analogies, the abuses of the word even. As in a kaleidoscope every turn produces a different pattern, so in a dictionary every paragraph presents another structure. And lastly, as the number of images the kaleidoscope evolves is infinite, so language is boundless and endless. A wag once said he did not like to read a dictionary as he lost the thread of the story in the great mass of detail. Yet there is a story in words, and a very fascinating one to those who love language : it is called derivation, the word's history and relationships.
And to the lexicographer there is another thread : the love of the thing, the lure of doing something that may live, which, like Ariadne's clew in the Cretan Labyrinth, leads him through a maze of toil into the open sunlight of the finished work.Dictionary of the french and english languages : with phonetic transcription of every fren [texte imprimé] / Kettridge, J.O., Auteur . - George routledge & sons, 1945 . - 528 p. ; 16 cm.
