This book entitled "Nautical Construction with Composite Materials" is a collection of the forty-five papers presented at the International Conference from the 7th to the 9th December 1992 in Paris. The present book presents the latest developments in the field of nautical construction with composites for pleasure boat, fishing, passenger transport and naval applications.
This conference has been organized on the same basis as its predecessors but directed towards a larger, international audience. This importance and the potential innovation that composite materials represent in nautical, naval and military construction in Europe and in most of the countries of the world involved in these kinds of construction, have made it necessary to extend the scope of the conference.
The special feature of these conferences was the meeting together of an extremely varied community: researchers, material suppliers, participants from large shipyards and small boatyards, naval architects, allowing a wide exchange of ideas and the identification of the most promising developments, the areas requiring further research, in order to improve economic feasibility and increase safety.
The conference was divided into five sessions. Each session is introduced by an overview paper authored by an internationally known expert.
The five subject areas are the following:
Session 1: design of structures
Optimization of structures to benefit from the multinational properties of reinforcements, and new material developments in fibbers and sandwich cores.
Session 2: calculation
Improvements in the prediction of the behaviour of composite structures by numerical methods.
Session 3: experimental characterization
Descriptions of correlations between experimental and numerical methods under quasi-static and dynamic loading, together with new test methods.
Session 4: degradation and control
Non-destructive testing methods, interaction with sea-water, fire resistance.
Session5: in-service behaviour and applications.
Experience with composites in pleasure boat and naval applications, from fabrication to everyday use.
This collection assembled in close collaboration with the international scientific and industrial community, is a work of reference for those interested in nautical construction and improve use of composite materials in high performance applications: naval architects, material supplies, engineers, technicians..........in boatyards, shipyards, classification societies and research centers. |
