Titre : Biogeochemistry of estuarine sediments Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Goldberg, Edward D., Auteur Editeur : UNESCO Année de publication : 1978 Importance : 293 p. Format : 27 cm. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-92-3-101594-6 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 552 Pétrologie : pétrographie, roches Résumé : The coastal zone represents one of the Earth's most complex and dynamic ecosystems. In these areas which fringe the continents of the globe, the intricate terrestrial and marine systems become even more complex as they respond to the pressures created by man. Development of coastal resources has obvious and profound effects on this environment which can be neither predicted nor controlled without full understanding of a particular coastal area.
Estuaries constitute a major area of concern to scientists and administrators as they focus their attention on the problems of coastal zone development and management. This interest is accentuated by the fact that many of the worlds largest cities are located on or near estuaries.
The history of the panel on the biogeochemistry of estuarine sediments is outlined by Edward D. Goldberg in the introduction to this volume. At its first meeting, panel members emphasized the need to develop an understanding of the natural chemical processes taking place in estuarine zones so that an assessment could be made of man's present and predicted impacts upon the environment. It was decided that the convening of an international workshop on the subject would be the most productive way of responding to this need.
This volume presents the proceedings of the workshop and reflects the diversity of approaches to a number of significant research problems. Within the four working group reports can be found succinct summaries of priority research areas as defined by workshop participants. Unesco hopes that scientists around the world, and particularly those in developing areas, will be able to use this information as a basis for their own programmes of research. The coastal area offers an unusual opportunity for the scientist and the administrator to work together and to ensure that vital decisions for economic growth can be made within the context of environmental conservation.Biogeochemistry of estuarine sediments [texte imprimé] / Goldberg, Edward D., Auteur . - UNESCO, 1978 . - 293 p. ; 27 cm.

Titre : The health of the ocean Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Goldberg, Edward D., Auteur Editeur : The unesco press Année de publication : 1976 Importance : 172 p. Format : 23 cm. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-92-3-101356-0 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 551 Géologie, météorologie, hydrologie générale Résumé : The question as to: why another book on marine pollution has confounded the author as it most probably will the reader. The most appealing rationale to the author is that many of the existing volumes are dedicated to describing the present situation rather than to attacking the more formidable problem of asking what we should know, in relation to what we do know, about the alteration of the ocean's chemistry by man, in order to regulate the releases of materials to the ocean. It is in this latter mood that the publication has been prepared.
A rather unusual situation exists in marine pollution problems. Most of the already identified pollutants that may jeopardize marine resources are in extremely low concentrations, both in sea water and in marine organisms, levels difficult to assay by competent chemists. As a consequence, there are very few analysts in the world capable of carrying out reliable analyses.
Thus, the small amounts of data produced by the few chemists come under intense assessment. There are less than a dozen laboratories in the world capable of measuring DDT or petroleum components in sea water. There are perhaps a similar number of laboratories that are engaged in analysis of transuranic element concentrations in the ocean system.
On the other hand, the more readily measurable heavy metals, some of which are classified as pollutants, enjoy an enormous literature. This, in one way the task of producing this book was simple, especially when focusing upon the more difficult to measure substances. Problems arose when trying to filter the substantial and significant information on heavy metal pollutants from the many numbers about their levels in marine samples, a large proportion of which appear to be random. The health of the ocean [texte imprimé] / Goldberg, Edward D., Auteur . - The unesco press, 1976 . - 172 p. ; 23 cm.

Titre : The sea : ideas and observations on progress in the study of the seas (volume 5) Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Goldberg, Edward D., Auteur Editeur : Wiley ineterscience publication Année de publication : 1974 Importance : 895 p. Format : 26 cm. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-471-31090-7 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 551 Géologie, météorologie, hydrologie générale Résumé : Oceanography has surged forward as a subject for research during the past twenty years, and great progress has been made in our understanding of the structure of the water masses, of the crust of the earth beneath the oceans, and of the processes which are involved in creating these structures. This progress has been particularly rapid in the recent past for two prime reasons. Firstly, techniques of investigation have become available which have made many hitherto intractable problems capable of solution. For example, it has only recently become possible to measure the value of gravity in a surface ship, to determine the deep currents of the oceans by direct methods, or to analyze wave spectra with the detail which modern electronic computers allow. The second reason for the present rapidity of progress lies in the increasing availability of the resources for both theoretical and practical marine investigations; the international character of oceanography and the growing worldwide interest in fundamental research has resulted in the provision of opportunities hitherto impossible.
