| Résumé : |
The fifth conference of the international association on water pollution research was held in San Francisco from July 27th to 31st, 1970 and in a reconvened session at Honolulu, Hawaii, from august 2nd to 5th.
Twelve panels each consisting of five experts drawn from different countries assisted in the selection of the papers. All the papers selected were presented and discussed.The edited discussions and the authors'replies will be found in this volume of the conference proceedings at the end of each of the groups into which the papers were divided.The description of these groups and the papers comprising each group are given as headings in the table of contents.
At San Francisco the papers were given at three concurrent sessions, viz.
Section I. freshwater problems.
Section II. waste treatment.
Section III. lake, estuarine, and coastal problems.
Several workshop sessions were also held at which short papers on a wide variety of subjects were presented and discussed. These proved to be so successful as a medium for the informal exchange of views that it has been decided to hold workshop sessions at the sixth conference to be held in Jerusalem from June 18th to 24th, 1972 and to include the papers and discussions in the printed proceedings. |

| Résumé : |
In recent years increasing attention has been given to the development of water quality standards and criteria based on biological considerations. A major objective of most water quality management programs is the protection and enhancement of the aquatic biota. To accomplish this goal, criteria are required to evaluate desirable water quality conditions.
In most cases the purpose of the criteria is to define conditions where the growth of some portion of the biota will not be adversely affected. Limitation of nutrient concentrations to prevent excessive growth of algae is one example. At the other extreme limitation of the concentrations of toxic materials is intended to prevent the inhibition of growth of desirable organisms.
Development of toxicity criteria is based commonly on results of acute bioassays with specific toxicants and using specific organisms. A toxicity criterion is usually expressed as a toxicant concentration that is obtained by multiplying the median lethal tolerance limit (TLm) by an application factor.
This procedure has a number of difficulties. The possible combinations of organisms to be protected and potential toxicants are very large. New toxicants are appearing almost continuously in the environment. The rational determination of suitable application factors is extremely difficult. There is a serious need for a gross toxicity criterion which can be used in water pollution control to supplement criteria for specific, known toxicants. |

| Résumé : |
The 71 papers published in this volume represent those selected by the programme committee of the international association on water pollution research for discussion at the Jerusalem conference out of the 176 completed papers that were submitted. Attention is drawn to the fact that each of the papers offered was adjudicated by five referees drawn from different countries and their assessments provided the basis of selection. The choice of papers for the conference was therefore made by a system which is quite 'as thorough as that used for the selection of papers for the international association's journal "water research". The International association would like to take this opportunity of recording its appreciation of the assistance that has been rendered by all the referees in the selection of papers.
In view of the association's policy to publish in the proceedings only those papers that were selected for discussion, the referees were also requested to assess the suitability for publication in water research of all the papers that were submitted for the conference. A proportion of those not included in the conference proceedings were recommended for publication and some of these, with the consent of the authors, will appear in water research in due course.
The international association on water pollution research is indebted to the publishers, Pergamon press Ltd., who have made every effort to include authors' last minute alterations to their texts so as to reduce corrections and amendments to papers to a minimum and who have delayed publication of the proceedings in order to include discussions that were delayed in arrival.
The Israel host committee by their efficient organization of the Jerusalem conference and the provision of editorial office facilities greatly contributed towards the successful presentation and discussion of papers and particularly in the collation of discussions. |

Air filtration : an integrated approach to the theory and applications of fibrous filters |

| Résumé : |
The need for clean air has probably never been greater. Many industrial employees need to avoid exposure to airborne particulates, while certain industrial processes demand clean air of exceptional quality. Medical and biological fields rely on sterile air, while filtration can improve air quality in offices, homes and all types of transport. Filters act in a variety of complex and subtle ways. Each chapter introduces its subject matter simply, before tackling the problem in greater depth. The book therefore provides an excellent basis for detailed study, but is also invaluable to anyone needing an overview of the subject.
Essential reading for industrial hygienists and engineers requiring an understanding of filtration, and for anyone whose work involves the maintenance or monitoring of air quality.
Contents:
macroscopic description of filter Behavior;
filter structure;
flow patterns and pressure drop;
particle capture by mechanical means;
electrically charged filter material;
particle capture by electric forces;
particle adhesion and particle bounce;
effect of loading;
filter testing;
index. |

| Résumé : |
The linear response of a two layer ocean model to a periodic wind stress curl in the presence of bottom photography has been investigated. For periods much less than the time taken for the wind generated baroclinic Rossby waves to pass over the topography (i.e. 'short' periods), the ocean response is primarily that for a homogeneous ocean and thus strongly modified by topography.
For periods much longer than this time (i.e. 'long' periods), the Rossby waves compensate for the effect of topography and the non-topographic Sverdrup balance holds. At intermediate periods, the phase and amplitude of the transport variations over topography can be understood in terms of a non-equilibrium baroclinic response forcing the barotropic mode over topography with relatively little feedback from the barotropic mode. The bottom topography therefore imposes a low pass filter on the transport variations. For the Atlantic at 25°N, the long period limit is of the order of years to decades, depending on the location of the wind stress variability, so at annual period the non-topographic Sverdrup balance is not applicable. Variations in transport can be forced by a wind stress over varying topography and by the passage of a coastal baroclinic Kelvin wave over topography.
At short periods (including the annual), the effect of strong bottom topography is similar to that of an island. It was found that both with and without associated bottom topography a north-south island acts as a spatial filter such that wind stress forcing of larger north-south scale to the east of the island contributes proportionately more to transport variations to the west of the island than forcing of smaller north-south scale. |
