This book is a product of three years of joint research effort by scientists of the " Institut Français de Recherche Scientifique pour le Developement" on cooperation ORSTOM of France, Fishery Research and Utilization Branch FRUB of Ghana, and Center de Recherches Oceanographiques CRO of Cote d'Ivoire.
The project aimed at understanding the proliferation of sardinellas in the coastal ecosystem of Code d'Ivoire and Ghana and which was dubbed the "sardinellas Puzzle".
This puzzle corresponds to the surprising observation made at the end of 1987, that the apparent abundance of Sardinella aurita had steadily increased since 1984. After some perplexities about this phenomena, some fisheries scientists of Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire , with the assistance of ORSTOM, decided to study the possible origin and consequences of the apparent proliferation of the sardinellas.
A programme, entitled " Grand Programme Sardinelle" GPS, was jointly designed by the cooperating scientists in mid-1990.
The programme received support from the Ministere de le Cooperation Française in 1991 and was executed until 1993. A mmeting was held in Accra in October 1993 to conclude this research. This book constitutes the record of this meeting.
It is certain that in the future, the demand for fish, especially of cheap fish, will stay at a high level in West Africa. The small pelagic fish resources of the Ivoiro-Ghanian upwelling and its adaptive management will be of utmost importance in this situation.
It is hoped that the pieces of new information and knowledge presented in this book will contribute towards obtaining the best possible uses of this resource. |
