In chapter 1, we explain the notation that is being used and recapitulate some of the relevant concepts of fluid dynamics. Though probably familiar too many readers, their presentation here avoids restatements in different places in the text. Chapter 2 deals with the state of matter near the interface. It follows the text of the first edition, but includes new material and references on sea ice and on bubbles and spray. Radiation is the topic of chapter 3, which has been significantly revised for the present edition. Special attention has been given to the determination of the radiation balance at the sea surface by remote sensing.
