Comparative anatomy is a part of biological systematic in the broad sense of that term, i.e. a part of the study of the diversity of forms of living matter. At first glance that diversity appears unlimited and chaotic, and merely to encompass and describe it calls for tremendous and well-planned labor. This problem is solved by means of systematic application of the comparative method, which consists in searching out, evaluating, and systematizing the similarities and differences between organisms. The comparative anatomical method is one of the special methods of systematic description of the diversity of organic forms.
It was not without reason that, during the period of creation of the principles of comparative anatomy at the beginning of last century, it was held to be a higher stage of knowledge than simple anatomical description and was designated by a special name. Comparative anatomy is not simple description, but is, in a sense, explanation. What does comparative-anatomical explanation consist of?. |
