The OECD Review of Fisheries: Country Statistics 2014 contains fisheries statistics and overview tables for OECD countries and non-member economies that participate in the OECD Committee for Fisheries.
The data cover the years 2006 to 2013. Information provided concern fishing fleet, employment in fisheries, fish landings, production from aquaculture, recreational fisheries, government financial transfers, and trade in fish and fish products.
The data are collected by the OECD using the methodologies established by the Coordinating Working Party on Fishery Statistics (CWP) (www.fao.org/fishery/cwp/search/en). This inter-agency body, created in 1960 to develop common procedures for the collation of statistics, provides technical advice on fishery statistical matters and facilitates the publication of methodological and reference documents. Its Handbook of Fishery Statistical Standards comprises definitions of the various concepts used in fishery statistics, with the exception of Government Financial Transfers which is unique to the,OECD. All other statistics are based on CWP definitions.
The OECD is the only organisation to collect and disseminate data concerning Government Financial Transfers (GFT). These transfers are defined as the monetary value of government interventions associated with fisheries policies and cover transfers from central, regional and local governments. GFT are indicators of financial support paid to the fisheries sector by government and are classified under one of these three headings:
1. Direct payments by government to fishers, which are primarily directed at increasing the income of fishers.
2. Cost reducing transfers, which are aimed at reducing the costs affixed capital and variable inputs.
3. General services, which are transfers paid by government not necessarily received directly by fishers, but which nevertheless reduce the costs faced by fishers. |
