This symposium, organized through the joint efforts of Unesco FAO and OAU, marked the completion of a most valuable cooperative effort on the part of these organizations in planning and guiding marine research in the region.
The symposium was largely devoted to the results of the international cooperative Investigations of the tropical Atlantic (ICITA) and the Guinean Trawling survey (GTS). The historical background of these cooperative international campaigns, as well as a general report on the symposium, is given in the first part of the proceedings published by FAO in 1967 (fisheries report no. 51).
By inviting review lectures covering physical and chemical oceanography, productivity and plankton, pelagic resources and demersal resourc the best possible background for presentation and discussion of contributions by ICITA and GTS participants, as well as by other scientists working in the area, was assured.
As this publication shows, knowledge of the tropical Atlantic and Gulf of Guinea has greatly increased and the importance of environmental studies with a view to understanding and evaluating the marine resources in the area is evident.
Significant as these results may be, more research is needed. In these areas which fringe the continents of the globe, the intricate terrestrial and marine systems become even more complex as they respond to the pressures created by man. Development of coastal resources has obvious and profound effects on this environment which can be neither predicted nor controlled without full understanding of a particular coastal area.
Estuaries constitute a major area of concern to scientists and administrators as they focus their attention on the problems of coastal zone development and management. This interest is accentuated by the fact that many of the worlds largest cities are located on or near estuaries.
The history of the panel on the biogeochemistry of estuarine sediments is outlined by Edward D. Goldberg in the introduction to this volume. At its first meeting, panel members emphasized the need to develop an understanding of the natural chemical processes taking place in estuarine zones so that an assessment could be made of man's present and predicted impacts upon the environment. It was decided that the convening of an international workshop on the subject would be the most productive way of responding to this need.
This volume presents the proceedings of the workshop and reflects the diversity of approaches to a number of significant research problems. Within the four working group reports can be found succinct summaries of priority research areas as defined by workshop participants. Unesco hopes that scientists around the world, and particularly those in developing areas, will be able to use this information as a basis for their own programmes of research.
