| Résumé : |
The last ten years of research in abyssal oceanology have yielded a wealth of new information about the patterns of life distribution in the deep-sea environment. This book, which draws from the authors' original research as well as from recent literature in the field, provides a cohesive view of the paleogeography, ecology, adaptation, migration, and zonation of abyssal fauna in the Northwest Atlantic, Southeast pacific, Arctic, and Antarctic oceans. Unlike previous studies, which concentrate on fishes in the deep-water column, it emphasizes the benthic realm, including animal life in and on the sea floor.
The first chapter of the volume is devoted to a history of abyssal research, with special reference to the experts and their contributions, their research vessels, and their expeditions. In the second chapter the authors assess present techniques of deep-sea data gathering, including deep-bottom photography. Chapter three constitutes a significant departure from previous studies in the area. The authors refute the validity of earlier definitions of the abyssal zone (such as a 2000 m depth) and assert that zones seem to be controlled by water mass and bottom current rather than by sediments, a constant depth, or a constant temperature. Using a variable depth limit, they establish an original bentho-abyssal scheme of zonation, based on faunal composition.
Succeeding chapters discuss in detail the various study regions and examine some general aspects of the ecology of deep-sea environments. The final chapter deals with the origin of deep-sea life and the evolution of the marine climate. Numerous illustrations based on in situ photographs taken by the authors, supplement the text and provide valuable new information about actual deep-sea conditions.
A unique blend of oceanography, ecology, and zoogeography, abyssal environment and ecology of the world oceans is an up-to-date source of information for oceanographers, biologists, and their students. In addition, because it presents data and conclusions pertinent to the regulation of oceanic pollution, the book will be of interest to those concerned with the control of pollution and with international use of the sea bed. |
