| Résumé : |
Sea fisheries have now become so internationally competitive that it is necessary to use all available technological and scientific knowledge to improve fishing conditions and catches.
This book summarizes the principal results of research in fisheries oceanography and marine fish ecology during the last eighty years and shows how to use the results of such research to benefit fisheries. It describes the influence of various environmental conditions on fish behaviour and fisheries resources. It also shows how to apply facts and principles of oceanography and maritime meteorology to commercial fisheries. Modern methods of fisheries resource evaluation and management on the bases of ecosystem approach are also reviewed.
The authors, experienced scientists at the Northwest and Alaska Fisheries Center of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, achieve their purpose in showing ways of profitably applying the results of research in the field covered by this book to commercial fishing. The text is concise and will benefit not only fisheries biologists and students but also fishing skippers, fisheries managers and administrators and those engaged in allied disciplines. |

639 Chasse et pêche commerciales, protection de la faune et la flore |
| Résumé : |
There is a general impression that changes in fish stocks are mainly caused by intensive fishing. Scarcely publicized is the multitude of causes of fish stock fluctuations. This book attempts to summarize the available knowledge on the subject and includes original work of the authors on a matter vital to the fisheries industries of the world.
The influence of catches on the age composition of exploitable stocks is explained with quantitative examples, and it is shown that the influence of heavy fishing on stocks is, in many cases, smaller than previous theories suggest. The effects of fishing are compared to those of natural factors influencing stock fluctuations. This quantitative knowledge of the effects of fishing will help to promote better fisheries management and emphasize its importance.
This book summarizes and evaluates conventional methods of fishery resource assessment and factors affecting recruitment fluctuations, as well as the effect of ocean environmental factors and behaviour of fish to fishing gear. |
