Prevention from nomical losses due to a degraded milieu and caused by ichtyotoxic algae is based on predictive models. A sustainable aquaculture will depend on new detection tools and techniques reducing the wastes. This book entitled " aquaculture environment and marine phytoplankton " consists on the proceedings of a symposium which was held in Brest, from 21 to 23 may 2001. The principal objective of this symposium was to bring together the recent results obtained from the European project "aquaculture management and ecological interaction of noxious phytoplankton developments in South America. Participants from eight countries and different institutions gave presentations in various sessions which provide a global view of their different approaches and needs concerning these universal questions. The proceedings are presented in three chapters: - aquaculture impact on the environment; - response of phytoplankton to anthropogenic disturbance; - application of the results to aquaculture managing. - The latter chapter meant to address people involved in the development and management of aquaculture.
