| Résumé : |
The climatic changes which could resuitfrom a major nuclearconflict would affect combatant and non-combatant nations alike. This and other long term environmental conséquences of nuclear war have been at the centre of the continuing nuclear debate in recent years.
Much has been said on this issue and much has been written, but until now there has been no comprehensive scientific basis for comment. The recent publication of the SCOPE Report on the Environ-mental Consequences of Nuclear War representa the first authorita-tive statement on the subject. This book provides a summary of that Report in a convenient and readable form. It is informed and objective, and presents the scientific case in a balanced and unbiased way. While the reader is left to form his or her own opinions, the views expressed in the Report are clear:
The majority ofpeople on Earth face the risk ofstarvation in the aftermath of a large-scale nuclear war; for those in non-combatant nations, famine could be the major consequence.
Climatic disturbances might persist for seyeral years, even in countries not direct/y involved in the war.
In short, it is possible that, in the aftermath of a major nuclear war, the global environment and human and social Systems could collapse to an extent that might preclude recovery to pre-war conditions. |
