| Résumé : |
Toxicology is the study of the adverse effects of chemicals and physical agents on living organisms. The term eco-toxicology which was first coined by Truhaut in 1969 has appeared to mean the study of the fate and effect of a toxic compound on an ecosystem (Moriarity, 1985). In some cases the major difference between classical toxicology and eco-toxicology is the species selected for the toxicological tests; in eco-toxicology acute toxicity is measured on the water flea (Daphnia spp.), while in classical toxicology the test animal is the laboratory rat. However, eco-toxicology attempts to relate the effect of toxic compounds on populations and communities in a particular ecosystem rather than to the effects on a single organism, as is done in classical toxicology. This approach has turned out to be extremely difficult, as the effect of a toxicant on one species in an ecosystem may be different from that on another species in the same ecosystem and may differ again from the effect of the same chemical on the same species in another ecosystem. |
