- 1980 . - 408 p. ; 23 cm.

Titre : CIESM atlas of exotic species in the mediterranean Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Zenetos, Argyro, Auteur Editeur : CIESM Année de publication : 2003 Importance : 376 p. Format : 22 cm. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-92-990003-3-5 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 900 Géographie, histoire, sciences auxiliaires de l'histoire Résumé : Seashells have fascinated man from the earliest prehistoric times. Beyond the understandable passion of conchologists lies a very serious object of study, as living mollusks form a key element of marine benthic ecosystems worldwide.
Therefore marine scientists, biodiversity experts, naturalists and shell collectors will all find this richly illustrated volume, the third in our atlas collection, an original and most useful addition to their library. The subject of the book is the relatively recent arrival of numerous species of mollusks in Mediterranean waters.
This wave of exotic introductions, mainly originating from the indo-Pacific realm, signals an on-going "tropicalization" of the Mediterranean fauna, confirming trends already documented for fish and crustacean species in our previous atlases.
Whether this reflects the initial phase of a long-term process linked to global climatic change or just a finite phase of biodiversity re-equilibrium at the Mediterranean end of the Suez Canal is far too early to ascertain.
CIESM, the Mediterranean science commission, is proud to present this atlas which provides an illustrated record, complete with distribution maps, biological annotations and identification keys, of 137 mollusk species, all recent newcomers to the Mediterranean sea. Of this number, 85% are tropical, originating from the Red Sea or from the broader indo-Pacific domain, and remain largely confined to the eastern Mediterranean basin. Most of the new sightings were recorded in the past three decades alone, in part the outcome of increasing scientific attention to marine biodiversity, but maybe also an indication that the Mediterranean sea is about to experience a major biological shift during the course of this century.
The volume is the fruit of six years of rigorous work: the authors analyzed thousands of bibliographic records, tirelessly combed the archives and reference collections of museums and institutes, all along drawing information from the wide CIESM network of experts and from trusted, knowledgeable collectors. It deserves to be widely read.CIESM atlas of exotic species in the mediterranean [texte imprimé] / Zenetos, Argyro, Auteur . - CIESM, 2003 . - 376 p. ; 22 cm.

Titre : CIESM atlas of exotic species in the mediterranean : crustaceans decapods and stomatopods Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Galil, Bella, Auteur Editeur : CIESM Année de publication : 2002 Importance : 192 p. Format : 22 cm. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-92-990003-2-8 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 900 Géographie, histoire, sciences auxiliaires de l'histoire Résumé : This volume, which follows the recent publication of our fish atlas, covers all the larger crustaceans. It documents the arrival in the past hundred years of sixty species of shrimps, lobsters and crabs the quasi-totality of tropical origin, all new to the Mediterranean sea.
The transfer of exotic species is as ancient as maritime transport: in phoenician time's organisms from distant shores, transported on ship hulls and in ballast across the strait of Gibraltar, and then from port to port around the basin, were certainly introduced to the Mediterranean world on more than one occasion.
What is striking is the rate of recent arrivals: 60 newcomers in only 100 years is a very high number compared to a pool of 350 autochtonous decapods species! The opening of the Suez Canal, the development of shipping traffic and of Mari-culture operations all provided major vectors to this latest wave of introductions. Whether or not global warming will accelerate this latest upsurge of tropical invasions is much open to question.
CIESM, the Mediterranean science commission, could only take a keen interest in a process which has major, yet poorly studied, impacts on the marine biodiversity of the whole region. This atlas is the outcome of five years of work by our expert group on crustaceans who carefully analyzed hundreds of records, ranging from the early Cambridge expedition to the most recent sightings signaled by the vast CIESM network of biologists.
Three-quarters of the exotic species identified are of indo-Pacific origin, most of them erythrean migrants having crossed the Suez Canal, and now largely settled in the eastern Mediterranean basin. The other exotics were introduced by shipping or mariculture transfer.
This finely illustrated atlas aims to be an essential reference for specialists and non-specialists alike, who will find distribution maps, key references, plus relevant biological and geographical annotations for each species, as well as an abundant bibliography.CIESM atlas of exotic species in the mediterranean : crustaceans decapods and stomatopods [texte imprimé] / Galil, Bella, Auteur . - CIESM, 2002 . - 192 p. ; 22 cm.

Titre : CIESM atlas of exotic species in the mediterranean : fishes Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Jean-Pierre, Quignard, Auteur Editeur : CIESM Année de publication : 2002 Importance : 254 p. Format : 22 cm. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-92-990003-1-1 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 900 Géographie, histoire, sciences auxiliaires de l'histoire Résumé : The appearance of exotic species in Mediterranean waters is not new: ever since phoenician times have marine organisms been transported on ship hulls and in ballast water across the strait of Gibraltar and around Mediterranean ports. But in recent history human technologies have definitely accelerated this phenomenon.
Connected to the red sea by the sea-level Suez Canal since 1869, criss-crossed by shipping routes, encircled by harbors and Mari culture farms, each providing a possible way of entry for non-native species , the Mediterranean sea appears exceptionally vulnerable to biological invasions.
CIESM, the Mediterranean science commission, naturally takes a keen interest in this process which has major impacts on marine biodiversity. Following a special session held during its 1992 congress in trieste, the commission mobilized large numbers of biologists on the subject, first through expert meetings, then through the establishment of task forces. One outcome, enriched by up-to-date maps of distribution and the best available information on the mode and date of introduction, is now in your hands. This atlas of exotic fishes, the first to appear in the collection, presents an illustrated record of 91 species.
The final selection emerged from a rigorous analysis, ranging from old scientific records to the most recent sightings. The quasi-totality of species is of tropical origin: roughly two-thirds from the red sea / indo-Pacific domain, the others from tropical regions of the Atlantic. They cover a broad taxonomic range: 56 fish families are represented.
The reader will note the drastic increase of exotic fish species over the last four decades, signaling a factual "tropicalisation" of the Mediterranean. An appreciation of their potential impact on the ecosystem, a precious annotated list of species excluded for cause from the atlas, plus a large bibliographic section, complete this volume which should serve as a reference for specialists and non-specialists alike for years to come.CIESM atlas of exotic species in the mediterranean : fishes [texte imprimé] / Jean-Pierre, Quignard, Auteur . - CIESM, 2002 . - 254 p. ; 22 cm.

Titre : Climate atlas of the atlantic ocean : derived form the comprehensive ocean atmosphere data set (coads) Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Lindau, Ralf, Auteur Année de publication : 2001 Importance : 501 p. Format : 30 cm. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-3-540-66813-8 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 900 Géographie, histoire, sciences auxiliaires de l'histoire Résumé : The growing interest in climate and climatic change has renewed the demand for climate descriptions of the world oceans. Fields of climate variables are used as boundary conditions, or sea truth, for atmospheric and oceanic models and coupled models of the atmosphere-ocean system. The rapid improvements that modeling has made in recent years also call for more detailed descriptions of processes at the air-sea interface. The climate atlas presented here is restricted to the Atlantic ocean. The Atlantic is of special interest for two reasons: The cross-equatorial ocean heat transport is an outstanding climatic feature which contributes to the high sea-surface temperatures in the Northeastern North Atlantic and the mild climate of Europe.
From a more technical point of view, the data coverage of the Atlantic is much denser than for other parts of the world oceans. Hence, the Atlantic can well serve as a reliable test area of sea truth for both modeling and satellite remote sensing.Climate atlas of the atlantic ocean : derived form the comprehensive ocean atmosphere data set (coads) [texte imprimé] / Lindau, Ralf, Auteur . - 2001 . - 501 p. ; 30 cm.
