- IFREMER, 1995 . - 147 p. ; 30 cm.

Titre : Correction on school geometry and density : approach based on acoustic image simulation Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Diner, Noel, Auteur Importance : pp. 211-222 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 578 Histoire naturelle des organismes vivants Résumé : Models of simulated schools have been used to determine the intrinsic variability in echo traces due to beam pattern effect. This work concerns only morphometric and energetic parameters that can be extracted from echotraces. It appears that dST, the difference between school density and processing threshold is a key parameter, which directly influences the concerned detection angles. Relations, taking into account dST but also, Nbj, the relative school length image compared to the beam width, have been settled for the calculation of length and density corrections. In most cases, corrected values are obtained with errors less than respectively 5% for length and 0.5 dB for density (reverberation index), provided that the Nbj value is 1.5 or more. When Nbj is less than 1, it seems impossible to bring some pertinent corrections. The school energy does not need any correction. It is recommended to use threshold values not too low, to avoid detection through the side lobes. However this setting must be determined in order to obtain dST values greater than 10 dB. Thresholds between -60 and -65 dB seem adequate, at least for schools volume backscattering strength (VBS, Sv) values commonly encountered in the Bay of Biscay. Titre : Evaluating uncertainly in measurements of fish shoal aggregate backscattering cross-section caused by small shoal size relative to beam width Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Diner, Noel, Auteur Importance : pp. 117-121 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 578 Histoire naturelle des organismes vivants Résumé : The aggregate backscattering cross-section, trag, is the sum of backscattering cross-sections of all fish in a shoal. It is a basic acoustical parameter used for shoal description and biomass estimation. Simulations were undertaken for evaluating the impact of horizontal dimension, density, depth and beam width on measurements of rag for shoals with constant abundance. The important factor determining measurement bias is the ratio of shoal size expressed as along cross-section length relative to along ship beam width at mean shoal depth. The results show that 10 logio(fag) is underestimated by about 8 dB for a 5 m long shoal located at 200 m depth if detected by a 7° beam. A formula for correcting (7ag estimates for shoal sizes bigger than 1.3 times the beam width is proposed. The negative measurement bias can also be reduced by using transducers with narrower beam widths.
