Titre : All the fish in the sea : maximum sustainable yield and the failure of fisheries management Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Finley, Carmel, Auteur Editeur : University of Chicago press Année de publication : 2011 Importance : 210 p. Format : 23 cm. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-226-70162-2 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 597 Vertébrés à sang froid. Poissons Résumé : Between 1949 and 1955, the State Department pushed for an international fisheries policy grounded in maximum sustainable yield (MSY). The concept is based on a confidence that scientists can predict, theoretically, the largest catch that can be taken from a species’ stock over an indefinite period. And while it was modified in 1996 with passage of the Sustained Fisheries Act, MSY is still at the heart of modern American fisheries management. As fish populations continue to crash, however, it is clear that MSY is itself not sustainable. Indeed, the concept has been widely criticized by scientists for ignoring several key factors in fisheries management and has led to the devastating collapse of many fisheries.
Carmel Finley reveals that the fallibility of MSY lies at its very inception—as a tool of government rather than science. The foundational doctrine of MSY emerged at a time when the US government was using science to promote and transfer Western knowledge and technology, and to ensure that American ships and planes would have free passage through the world’s seas and skies. Finley charts the history of US fisheries science using MSY as her focus, and in particular its application to halibut, tuna, and salmon fisheries. Fish populations the world over are threatened, and All the Fish in the Sea helps to sound warnings of the effect of any management policies divested from science itself. All the fish in the sea : maximum sustainable yield and the failure of fisheries management [texte imprimé] / Finley, Carmel, Auteur . - University of Chicago press, 2011 . - 210 p. ; 23 cm.

Titre : Ocean year book (tome 3) Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Borgese, Elisabeth Mann, Auteur Editeur : University of Chicago press Année de publication : 1978 Importance : 581 p. Format : 25 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-226-06604-2 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 551 Géologie, météorologie, hydrologie générale Résumé : This volume reflects and enhances the revolutionary changes of our era: the advent, on the scene of international relations, of so many new actors (developing countries and no states, like the European Communities or the liberation movements); the new role of science and technology; the growing impact of industrial civilization on the environment; the transformation of the concepts of ownership and sovereignty; the transition from a laissez-faire system to one of management; the emergence of a new, structured relationship between multinational companies and the international community and, more broadly, between economics and politics in general.
That this transition is groping, and that the document is marred by imperfections and contradictions, goes without saying. The basic defects as pointed out in Ocean Yearbook 1 lack of precision in the definition of boundaries; inequity in the distribution of ocean space and resources; imbalance between national and international interests and between national rights and national responsibilities; basic misconceptions with regard to the management of seabed resources embodied in a "parallel system" that cannot possibly function the way it was intended; lack of institutional infrastructure in other aspects of ocean management all these defects remain in the Draft Convention just as they were in the ICNT.Ocean year book (tome 3) [texte imprimé] / Borgese, Elisabeth Mann, Auteur . - University of Chicago press, 1978 . - 581 p. ; 25 cm.

Titre : Plankton wonders of the drifting world Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Sardet , Christian, Auteur Editeur : University of Chicago press Année de publication : 2015 Importance : 222 p. Format : 33 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-226-18871-3 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 577 Ecologie Résumé : Plankton drift through our world mostly unseen, yet these diverse organisms account for 95% of ocean life. Plankton are the foundation of the aquatic food web. They produce as much oxygen and consume as much carbon dioxide as land-based plants.
Viewing plankton up close for the first time can be a thrilling experience—an elaborate but hidden part of the cosmos opens up before your eyes. The hundreds of close-up photographs in this book will transport you into the waters where jeweled chains hang next to phosphorescent chandeliers, spidery claws jut out from sinuous bodies, and gelatinous barrels protect microscopic hearts. Jellyfish, tadpoles, and bacteria all find a place in the book as part of the vast assemblage of organisms dependent on drifting currents. Scientists, artists, and entrepreneurs are just starting to tap the potential of this undersea realm. Yet, for most people these pages will represent uncharted waters. Plankton: wonders of the drifting world is a spectacular journey that will change how you see the oceans, fuel your imagination, and make you think in new ways about your place in the natural world.Plankton wonders of the drifting world [texte imprimé] / Sardet , Christian, Auteur . - University of Chicago press, 2015 . - 222 p. ; 33 cm.
