Titre : Concrete in the marine environment Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Mehta, P. Kumar, Auteur Editeur : Taylor & Francis Année de publication : 2005 Importance : X-214 p. Format : 24 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 9781851666222 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 620 Art de l'ingénieur et activités connexes Résumé : This book is in response to a need for presentation of the available knowledge in a logical and comprehensive manner.
Chapter 1 of the book contains a description of the various types of marine structures, and some examples of sophisticated concrete structures that have either been recently built or under construction. In Chapter 2, a description of the marine environment is given including the chemistry of seawater, marine organisms, typical temperature and hydrostatic pressure conditions in the oceans, tidal action, storm waves, and impact from floating ice. Chapter 3 contains a review of the composition, microstructure, and engineering properties of normal portland cement concrete. In Chapter 4, several case histories of concrete deterioration as a result of long exposure to seawater are described. This chapter is followed by a comprehensive discussion, in Chapter 5, of the physical and chemical causes of deterioration of reinforced concrete in seawater. Discussed in particular are the phenomena of corrosion of reinforcing steel, expansion and cracking of concrete by freezing and thawing cycles, sulfate and alkali-silica attacks, crystallization pressure of salts, and microorganism attack on concrete.
Chapter 6 contains comprehensive information on the selection of materials and mix proportions for concrete mixtures that may be required to show long-term durability in seawater. A new method of proportioning highly durable concrete, containing superplasticizing and pozzolanic admixtures, is described. Recommended construction practice (i.e., mixing, transport, placement and curing) is briefly discussed in Chapter 7. Since many old marine structures are in various states of deterioration, a rather detailed description of repair and rehabilitation of deteriorated concrete is presented in Chapter 8. In particular, procedures for evaluation of the condition of a structure before repairing, and guidelines for the selection of repair materials and methods are given.
The author hopes that this simple book will serve the need of practicing engineers involved in the design and construction of concrete sea structures. It is also hoped that the book is useful to civil engineering educators, who have the responsibility of training tomorrow's designers and builders of structures.Concrete in the marine environment [texte imprimé] / Mehta, P. Titre : Geographic information systems in oceanography and fisheries Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Geoff Meaden, Auteur Editeur : Taylor & Francis Année de publication : 2002 Importance : 209 p. Format : 24 cm. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-415-28463-9 Langues : Français (fre) Index. décimale : 551 Géologie, météorologie, hydrologie générale Résumé : Over the fast two decades there has been increasing recognition that problems in oceanography and fisheries sciences and related marine areas are nearly ail manifest in the spatiotemporal domain. Geographic information systems (GIS), the natural Framework for spatial data handling, are being recognised as a powerful tool with useful applications in marine sciences. This book provides a thorough examination of marine GIS applications that include a wide variery of methods and sophisticated approaches in coastal, continental shelf, and deep océan studies. The book also presents new innovative approaches to using GIS in the examination of the dynamic relations that characterise the marine world, including marine GIS macro routines for the development of oceanography and fisherier GIS tools and applications.
The book is split into four parts. The fïrst gives an overview of marine GIS, including conceptual issues on marine spatial thinking and models of marine GIS development. The second and third parts examine thé main sampling methods and oniine sources of spatially referenced data, and discuss application examples and innovative approaches in GIS developments for many oceanographie and fisheries tasks. The fourth part presents GIS technical issues by listing marine GIS routines for a wide array of GIS tasks.Geographic information systems in oceanography and fisheries [texte imprimé] / Geoff Meaden, Auteur . - Taylor & Francis, 2002 . - 209 p. ; 24 cm.

Titre : Marine and coastal geographical information systems Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Wright, Dawn J., Auteur Editeur : Taylor & Francis Année de publication : 2000 Importance : 320 p. Format : 23 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-7484-0870-2 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 778 Différents domaines de la photographie Résumé : Marine and coastal applications of GIS are finally gaining wide acceptance in scientific as well GIS communities, and cover the fields of deep sea geology, chemistry and biology, and coastal geology, biology, engineering and resource management. Comprising rigorous contributions from a group of leading scholars in marine and coastal GIS, this book will inspire and stimulate continued research in this important new application domain.
Launched as a project to mark the UN International Year of the Ocean (1998), and supported by the International Geographical Union's Commission on Coastal Systems, Marine and Coastal Geographical Information Systems covers progress and research in the marine and coastal realms, in the areas of theory, applications and empirical results. It is the first book of its kind to address basic and applied scientific problems in deep sea and coastal science using GIS and remote sensing technologies. It is designed for GIS and remote sensing specialists, but also for those with an interest in oceans, lakes and shores. Coverage ranges from seafloor spreading centers to Exclusive Economic Zones to microscale coastal habitats; and techniques include submersibles, computer modelling, image display, 3-D and temporal data visualization, and development and application of new algorithms and spatial data structures. It illustrates the broad usage of GIS, image processing, and computer modelling in deep sea and coastal environments, and also addresses important institutional issues arising out of the use of these technologies.Marine and coastal geographical information systems [texte imprimé] / Wright, Dawn J., Auteur . - Taylor & Francis, 2000 . - 320 p. ; 23 cm.
