Résumé :	The study of oster pond was a low-cost backyard operation, but it cut through much of the whole field of oceanography. The scientific opportunities, the low costs, and the widespread occurrence of such ponds suggest that they may serve as useful environments for investigation during the present period of rapid growth of oceanographic education in the United States and in many other countries.
