| Résumé : |
This unique volume brings together the views of zoologists and paleontologists specializing in the study of metazoan colonies. Contents include expanded versions of papers from the symposium on animal colonies held at the november 1971 meeting of the geological society of America and the paleontological society, as well as additional commentary and papers of a review nature which provide an overall perspective. The outstanding contributors examine the basic nature of metazoan colonies, review much of the existing literature, and offer new morphologic data from both fossil and modern animals.
Since the members of these colonies groupings of physically interconnected individuals having a common ancestry through asexual reproduction exhibit inferred genetic constancy, it is possible to evaluate directly non-genetic factors controlling morphologic and physiologic differences. Ontogeny, astogeny, polymorphism, and micro-environmental differences are analyzed without the complications of genetic variation. The understanding of morphologic and physiologic expression derived from this research has theoretical application throughout the animal kingdom.
The papers present new information on the development and function of key groups of living and fossil colonial animals. New descriptive data permit evaluation of the concept of coloniality as applied to the porifera, coelen-terata, bryozoa, and hemichordata (class graptolithina). The magnificent fossil records of these phyla are used to document the evolution of the colonial habit.
The text is extensively illustrated with 140 line drawings and over 200 photographs. |
